Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca's naturally striped slopes, colored by mineral deposits and revealed by melting glaciers — one of Peru's most photographed landscapes, reached by a steep high-altitude hike.

Rainbow Mountain only became widely known around 2015, after melting ice and snow exposed the striped mineralogy beneath — layers of red, gold, and lavender formed by sediment laid down over millions of years. It’s now one of the most-searched destinations in Peru, and one of the most physically demanding day trips, with the trailhead itself starting above 4,300 m.

Because afternoon clouds frequently roll in and obscure the view, tours depart Cusco in the very early morning (often before 4:00 AM) to reach the summit by mid-morning. The nearby Red Valley offers a quieter, equally striking add-on for travelers with energy to spare.
